About M. Townsend

M. Townsend is a writer, memoirist, and fine art photographer who also dabbles in watercolor doodling. Her work explores the quiet practice of noticing life, the reality of a long marriage, and the emotional push and pull of belonging to two places. She spends most of her time stacking words and capturing fleeting light long before they reach the page or lens while dividing her days between Truckee, California, and the historic village of Vagliagli in Chianti, Italy.

Her current creative focus is her debut memoir, The House at the Town's End. — excerpts from the book are on Substack, alongside her Field Notes— a collection of thoughts, photographs, and watercolors that arrive before the prose.

M. Townsend has spent her lifetime working at the junction of language and visual art. In her educational career, she taught literacy to young readers and instructed fourth- and sixth-grade ESL students in the craft of writing. As a visual artist, she has sold cameras, shot professional wedding photography, and taught the technical and creative elements of photography to others. The wandering has taken many forms.
